The Story / Build Page

From driveway ideas to a backroad-ready basecamp.

This page tells the story behind Chasing Campfires and the evolving 2023 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X build — focused on capability, comfort, clean organization and the freedom to disappear down a forest road for the weekend.

If you originally wanted a “title page,” this page serves that role: the origin story, the build vision and the personality behind the site.

What Chasing Campfires is about

At its core, Chasing Campfires is a weekend overland project built around getting outside more often and making the truck work harder and smarter with every iteration.

The focus is simple: build a rig that supports quick escapes, comfortable nights, reliable power, practical storage and enough flexibility to handle both outdoor adventure and radio/comms use.

Build priorities

  • Efficient rear storage and sleeping platform layout
  • Clean power and battery organization
  • Solar to support longer stays and more autonomy
  • A canopy/camper setup that balances comfort with trail usability
  • Enough flexibility for camp life, photography and comms
Build timeline

How the setup came together

Step 01

Power planning

The foundation started with laying out battery placement, wiring routes and practical power access for camp use.

Step 02

Framing the platform

Wood framing transformed the canopy into a functional base for storage, organization and sleeping support.

Step 03

Cabinet and storage fitment

With the structure in place, cabinetry and storage components made the interior cleaner and more usable.

Step 04

Finishing the interior

The interior evolved toward a more complete, polished and trail-ready living space inside the canopy.

Step 05

Solar and final refinement

Roof-mounted solar and finishing details helped turn the build into a dependable self-supported weekend setup.
